Existing technology

The Partnership Talking Traffic makes optimum use of existing telecommunication facilities and the equipment already connected to those facilities, for making mobility smarter, more efficient and more sustainable. Within the existing Dutch telecom network, it is possible to communicate data from a set of traffic lights, via the cloud, onto the dashboard of the road user, and to feed back information about the approaching road user to the traffic light, within a single second.

Using the existing telecommunication networks means the investments are kept relatively low and that road users with a smartphone have access to the services. This approach also ties in with the pragmatism of the Dutch hybrid C-ITS strategy, according to which C-ITS applications can make use of both cellular technology in existing and future telecom networks (4G, LTE/-V, and 5G) and short range communication (ITS G5), depending on the application.
